Brotherhood Outcasts Codex

The Codex is the constitution and set of laws for the Brotherhood of Steel.

Doctrine

Doctrine
Shield yourself from those not bound to you by steel, for they are the  blind. Aid them when you can, but lose not sight of yourself. Give way your suspicions to the wisdom of thine Elder. Where he shows trust, so  shall you. Fear those who do not pledge to the Brotherhood for though their eyes may be opened through service, they are now blind. Through discourse, we gain the strength of our Brothers' minds. Lies of any kind  achieves nothing no matter the size, it only weakens the Brotherhood. The preservation of tech is our first goal, all others are secondary, even the life of those blind to the brotherhood. The Caste we belong to is your  only concern, you will follow your leader and your leader will lead you. You may only follow the orders of another if it will save the life of a brother. Theft is for lesser men, the Brotherhood provides for you and you provide for the Brotherhood. Do not wear what lesser men see as  fashionable for those objects do nothing but shame your fellow brothers. The Blind can not read, only those of the Brotherhood may read these text.

The Brotherhood Outcasts

The Brotherhood Outcasts are a splinter faction of the Brotherhood of Steel that broke ties with Elder Lyons’ group at the Citadel. The Outcasts attribute their departure to their belief that Elder Lyons had lost sight of the Brotherhood’s true mission and the original reason for their presence in the Capital Wasteland: the recovery and preservation of advanced pre-War technology.

Symbolism of the Insignia

In the Brotherhood symbol, the gears represent their engineering  knowledge, the sword is their will to defend themselves, the wings  represent the uplifting hope that the acquisition of lost technology represents  for mankind's salvation following the devastation of the Great War, and the circle represents the fraternal unity that  makes the organization a true brotherhood.

Symbolism of the Insignia

Another interpretation is that the  Brotherhood's symbol represents each of  the organizations different orders. The sword represents the Paladins, the wings  represent the Elders, the large gear represents the Knights, and the two smaller gears represent the Scribes and  the Initiates, whose services keep the Knights supplied with the information and the manpower required to get their jobs done.

Chain of Command

Military

High Elder

The High Elder is the leader of the order. Also one of the grand and  highest position within the order

Elder

The Elders from the Brotherhood's ruling council. Individual Elders are  occasionally leaders of localized splinter chapters of the Brotherhood.

General

Generals control all of the Brotherhood's military. They report to the High  Elder and the Elder Council and will only make a move if it's approved by them. They obtain the title of General by showing outstanding  performance in military tactics and combat. They help decide the titles of the most promising recruits from Initiates and Squires all the way up to  the Head Paladin and Head Knight.

Head Paladin

The Head Paladin is responsible for dealing with the paladins in the same  way the Head Knight does, but the Head Paladin chooses which paladins should lead each knight squad and which areas may prove to be suitable  HQ's. The Head Paladin holds meetings with the High Elder, Elders, Head Scribe, Generals and Head Knight. Both the Head Knight and Head Paladin  report to the High Elder and Generals, no one else. The Head Paladin and Knight don't tend to go out into the field of battle, although they may in  critical circumstances. When they do enter a battle it is almost certain that they will have a huge army protecting them and will very rarely be seen on the front line, they normally sit back with the Generals and help  plan strategic maneuvers.

Head Knight

The Head Knight is responsible for allocating knights to missions. The  Head Knight is also responsible for reporting all incidents involving the  knights to the Generals, Elders or High Elder. The Head Knights are also present at meetings with the High Elder, Elders, Head Scribe, Generals  and Head Paladin.

 Senior Paladin

Senior Paladins are Paladins which show promise to become Paladin  Commanders, Paladin Lords or Sentinels. They are very well respected  among other Paladins and Knights, and can increase the morale of soldiers greatly.

Senior Knight

Senior Knights are Knights which show promise to move up to be  Paladins, Knight Commanders or Knight Captains. They are very well  respected among the other Knights.

Paladin

Paladins are a class of members of the Brotherhood of Steel. They are  likened to the Scribes and Knights of the Brotherhood as being on the same level, but with a different purpose. They are the protectors of the  Brotherhood, fighting and protecting its interests across the wasteland, equipped with power armor and an array of lethal weapons.

Junior Paladin

Not much is known about this rank only that it is higher than  Journeyman Knight.

Journeyman Knight

Journeymen Knight is the one small step rank before becoming a full  fledged knight. It is where an initiate decides after his/her advancement  whether to continue as a knight or scribe. It is an important step in advancement as they continue to serve the Brotherhood.

Apprentice Knight

Apprentice Knight are in development of becoming a knight, they still  need more training and studies.

Senior Initiate

Senior Initiates are Initiates which have completed basic training and  move on to more advanced training.

Initiate

The Brotherhood uses the term to indicate a mere trainee as having been  initiated into the Brotherhood, whereas the other two reserve that title until the recruit has completed initial training. The most plausible  explanation lies. The bulk of its new recruits are the offspring of existing members, and only rarely are outsiders accepted into the organization.

Civilian

Head Scribe

The Head Scribe is the highest ranking civilian class of the BoS. The Head  Scribe is responsible for choosing which Scribes work on which project and which scribes should be assigned to each order. The Head Scribe  also chooses the High Scribes or Proctors of each order and must also oversee the projects each order is working on. The Head Scribe is a highly intelligent person who has mastered the orders of the Sword,  Shield and Quill, and may also take on a project of their own interest. The Head Scribe is one of the people who must attend the meetings with the High Elder, Elder Council, Generals, Head Paladin and Head Knight.  The Head Scribe Reports to the High Elder and Elder Council only.

Senior Scribe

Senior Scribes are some of the most advanced Scribes. They are always  chosen for the most important projects and are the next in line to become  proctor of orders when the old proctor retires or dies. They often take on the most promising Journeyman Scribes to be their apprentices and  choose what order they should be in. Senior Scribes teach their apprentices everything they know and will continue to teach them until they are nearly Senior Scribes themselves. On rare occasions, the Senior  Scribe will be promoted to Head Scribe and their Apprentice to High Scribe. When this occurs, the apprentice will be given special treatment and the Elders usually separate the two to remove any impression of impropriety.

Journeyman Scribe

Journeyman Scribes are Scribes-in-training. They are often taken in by  one of the Senior Scribes and made apprentices, where they are then taught to be full Scribes. If they are not apprenticed by a Senior Scribe,  they are often chosen to work on projects that are very insignificant. Journeyman Scribes start off in no order but will either pick an order themselves, or their master will choose for them.

Apprentice Scribe

Apprentice Scribe are development stage of becoming a scribe, they are  still in training and studies.

Order of The Sword
PALADINS

In charge of all security and outside activities. They are the protectors of the Brotherhood, fighting and protecting its interests across the wasteland, equipped with power armor and an array of lethal weapons. Paladins are the protectors of the Brotherhood and their spec ops. Each is a highly trained combat veteran with high tech equipment at their disposal. They are responsible for maintaining security, from enemies both within and without the Brotherhood

KNIGHTS

Knights are the main military force in the Brotherhood of Steel, the private of the Brotherhood if you want to role with the US Army from before the great war. The biggest job for a Knight is to retrieve technology for the scribes to analyse and research, but guards also do guard duty, scouting and exploration missions. without the Knights the Brotherhood of Steel would collapse down. Knights also craft everything that has to be crafted in the Brotherhood

Order of The Quill
SCRIBES

Being a scribe, you are showing that you support structure, strength of position and might in the face of adversity. You aren’t saying you are a pencil pusher, only being around to record and not be a part of the recording. No, In Circle of Steel every man is accountable for his or her actions and scribes are no different. Here, you will strengthen our defenses, upgrade and create the strongest weapons and bolster the finest armor that West Virginia has ever seen. Our three roles are designed to pinpoint the needs of our chapter from being a frontlines Specialist to a nomadic base defense Engineer and even rolling as an Archivist and aiding in creating Missions for our cause. If you choose to be part of our family, expect to be actively engaged and asked to help our cause.

Tactics

In the brotherhood, we adapt the pre-war tactics for our advantages in  battles. These tactics are all different and should use in specific battles.  These tactics should be known by your Commanding Officer and yourselves.

Tactics

General tactics

Exploiting prevailing weather – the tactical use of weather as a  force multiplier has influenced many important battles throughout  history, such as the Battle of Waterloo

Fire attacks – Reconnaissance by fire is used by apprehensive  soldiers when they suspect the enemy is nearby.

Force concentration – The practice of concentrating a military force  against a portion of an enemy force.

Night Combat - Combat that takes place at night. It often requires  more preparation than combat during daylight and can provide  significant tactical advantages and disadvantages to both the attacker and  defender.

Reconnaissance - A mission to obtain information by visual  observation or other detection methods, about the activities and  resources of the enemy or potential enemy, or about the meteorologic,  hydrographic, or geographic characteristics of a particular area.

Scrolls

The Scrolls are an important area of the Codex, and cover the lives and  deeds of all Brothers, and its upkeep is the duty of the head librarian of  each Brotherhood installation. The information held in the Scrolls can be a member's biography, contributions, the battles they partook in, kills,  promotions, technological discoveries, and their death to name a few.

Regulation
Every rules must be applied to every member of the brotherhood,  especially to High Elders. The list of rules contain are:

Oath of Fraternity

The Oath, or the Oath of Fraternity, is a Brother's signing of agreement  to brotherhood/fraternity and with the Codex's teachings. To every new comers in the order. The Elder will read the oath and the Initiate must  repeat what he said

“I, [username], .uphold the position in the brotherhood as a brother or  sister. I will follow the codex and fulfil my position for the betterment of  the Brotherhood. I will fight and die with my fellow members with honor. From time on, my placement will be important in times against all  foes. For the Brotherhood, for mankind”

Technology

Military technology is the Brotherhood's main priority, and their efforts over the centuries have equipped them with a powerful array of power armor, energy weapons, defense turrets, combat implants, and computers. Their devotion to the cause of collecting technology is such that they are willing to go to war in order to obtain it, even against much larger organizations such as the NCR.

Although less advanced than the Enclave, Brotherhood soldiers are generally equipped with energy weapons and suits of power armor, usually either the T-60, T-51b or T-45d models, all three of them were designed before the Great War. Recon armor and combat armor is also widely used, primarily by scouts, knights, and initiates. In addition, the Brotherhood has access to some of the best medical technology available in the post-war world, and other technologies such as cybernetics and surgical implants.

The Brotherhood also has access to advanced computers which they have found in various military bases and Vault-Tec Vaults such as the Lost Hills bunker, the ruins of the Pentagon, Bunkers Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Hidden Valley and the Vault prototype.

They also possess heavy duty combat robots that have assisted them in battle, like the intimidating sentry bots, and even a 40-foot Communist-hating metal giant in the hands of the East Coast detachment.

Attitudes + Relations + Ranks

Attitude Towards Mutants

The Brotherhood's attitude towards mutants ranges from dislike (e.g. in the case of ghouls) to outright hostility (in the case of super mutants). Early contact with the Master's super mutants was mostly hostile, and the BoS helped drive the majority of the mutant armies away from California. The Brotherhood grew angry when various salvaging operations began in the Glow, a location which the Brotherhood came to regard highly both for their fallen comrades and the pre-Great War technology located there, with Dayglow ghouls at the forefront. Most Brotherhood members came to see ghouls as filthy scavengers. In the years after the Master's defeat in New California, many super mutants settled peacefully among humans and the Brotherhood was no longer hostile to them.

Relations With The Outsides

While they are generally not hostile to others without a good reason, members of the Brotherhood are not interested in justice for the obviously weaker and less fortunate wastelanders around them. They largely focus on keeping their secrecy and preserving and developing technology, which they often put above human life since technology is irreplaceable in the post-nuclear wastelands—lives are not. Their motives are often unclear, and Brotherhood members are not people to be trifled with.

The Brotherhood does not like to share their choicest technological bits with others, despite the obvious benefits their technology could bring to the Wasteland. It is a commonly accepted truth within the Brotherhood that the people of the Wasteland are not responsible enough to use (and maintain) all of the technology they have at their disposal. They are known for trading some of their technologies with frontier communities and the states of the New California Republic in exchange for food and other resources, but they keep the more sensitive and advanced technologies to themselves.

Ranks

Main article: Brotherhood of Steel ranks
The Brotherhood of Steel is organized into different ranks: Initiates are trainees who are expected to perform well enough in the training process to be promoted to Senior Initiates, and later to Apprentices. After proving themselves, Apprentices are promoted to the rank of Journeyman Knights or Scribes. The next rank is Knight Sergeant/Senior Scribe, Knight Captain, and finally the leader of each of these orders is the Paladin and the Head Scribe.

Brotherhood Scribes are responsible for investigating and reverse-engineering the ancient technologies, maintaining the current technology of the Brotherhood and even experimenting with new weapons and other useful devices. Scribes rarely leave the safety of the Brotherhood's bunkers and outposts, but they are sometimes called into the field to examine a piece of technology or perform a task beyond the skills of the Brotherhood's soldiers.

Ranks

Brotherhood Knights are responsible for manufacturing the weapons and other pieces of technology used by the Brotherhood, although they also take part in combat activities. After many years of service and experience, the best Knights are promoted to Paladins - the pinnacle rank of the Brotherhood military. Paladins are in charge of all security and outside activities. The Paladin ranks are Junior Paladin, Paladin, Senior Paladin, Star Paladin and Head Paladin. Paladins who survive to their later years become Elders, and they make up the Brotherhood's ruling council. Among this branch of the Brotherhood an additional rank, Sentinel, exists between Paladin and Elder. The leader of the council and the Brotherhood itself is the High Elder, usually descended from the Maxson family.
